then they came for you and there was nobody left to speak up!

Watching the news these days makes my stomach turn. It seems to me that everyday there is a new story about how one group or another is being singled out for attack. Koran burnings. Anti-gay marriage protests. White students wearing U.S. flag t-shirts on Cinco De Mayo to incite Mexican students. Tensions flaring. Wounds all open. The media doing very little to provide a positive dialogue…just there to report incite the masses. If your cause is Anti-something I’m sure there is a politician out there willing to campaign for you. Where are the candidates willing to speak for those who are having their rights taken away?

We all can see how they are going after Muslims, Gays and “Illegal” Immigrants. Who are they? Fear mongers. Hate spewers. People with limited intelligence aka bigots. Their voices are so loud that it seems like their message has spread and is beginning to infest more Americans. So, yeah if they can get people believing that a sitting American President has suddenly changed religions because he was willing to speak for a group who was having their rights threatened what do you think they can do to us?

“THEY CAME FIRST for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist.

THEN THEY CAME for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

THEN THEY CAME for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew.

and by that time no one was left to speak up.” ~ Pastor Martin Niemöller

Is America the new Nazi Germany? Sometimes I think, YES!

I’m going to rewind things a bit…think about how in the early 2000’s how very few people were concerned about something as huge as how job creation affects the U.S. economy. I was no Lou Dobbs fan but I did watch his show regularly, his series, “The Fleecing of America” on CNN had me very concerned about where our economy was headed. I remember trying to have discussions with friends and family about some of the things he was speaking on and NOBODY cared. Fast forward to late 2007, suddenly some people wanted to start discussing that same stuff with me. Fast forward to Summer 2010, job creation and the economy is all anyone can talk about. Why is everyone suddenly talking about job creation and the economy? The reason is because these days if it isn’t hurting you it probably is hurting someone you know.

It is sad and unfortunate that people don’t care to speak about issues until it becomes a problem about them!

Yes, your neighbors might run their homes in a ways you might not agree with or that are against your beliefs but will you let them come for your neighbors without speaking on their behalf. They’ll come first for the gay couple across the street and you won’t say anything because you aren’t gay. Then they will come for the family of immigrants and you won’t say anything because you are a natural born citizen. Then they’ll come for the Muslim family and you won’t say anything because you aren’t a Muslim. When they come for you…you’ll be alone on that block and nobody will speak for you either.

It isn’t too late to speak, yet…

Who will you speak for?
